Seriously. She did. She is here on the Seattle U campus and just took a stroll through Sullivan Hall. I tried to give a nice warm smile that says “I know who you are and I appreciate you being here.” Her smile back was more like “thanks.”

I heard about the kites on the radio in the morning, then saw them from the freeway as I rode the bus home from school. I had to jump on my bike and head out to see them. I’ve been meaning to add a little variety to the blog postings, and this was the perfect instance.

According to the Seattle P-I, there were supposed to be 121 kites flying at a time — one for each credit union in the state. The project, a “kite ballet” was the work of Seth Abramson of West Virginia.

"I'm only happy when it rains"

I’m sure I’ll be posting this quote several times, though I’d better do it at least once outside.

Today was the first time that I had a real substantial amount of reading to be done for law school, and I rewarded myself after each 90 minute chunk with a cup of coffee outside in the rain. Seattle got a nice soaking. And of course it’s Labor Day which also marks the end of summer. It was hot, I got very tan, and rode my motorcycle a lot. But not comes drizzly and gray autumn, which I actually enjoy.

I start a new lease (Sept. 1, technically). So let’s unpack that. Is it a new lease on life? Cliché. Ouch. This is a new(ish) beginning though. This weekend’s moving fiasco and moving out from an apartment with fun summer friends is the end of the parts of my life that were temporary or in flux — a seasonal summer job at a beach, blowing off studying for sunsets because the summer in Seattle is just that damn nice, and meeting friends of friends who you know aren’t really going to stay friends, but that’s just fine with everyone because everyone is moving on anyway. So now I get a routine, one that I can pretty much bank on for the next nine months, give or take a few things here and there — vacations and maybe some work. Just as I sign a rental lease, locking myself into an agreement for a year, I’ve signed a sort of lease that puts an incredible amount of responsibility on me to be … well, responsible.
There is a feeling when school starts — discipline. “Get back on track people,” is what the orientations and first days of class really mean. “You can’t build your life with summers. Get back at it.”
I am back at it, or I am starting Monday. This summer was the preface to Randy Trick Vol. 2.

An empty closest means it's moving day

It used to be that I could fit all of my possessions in my SUV. I used to move each year in college … one year I moved four times from one January to another. I gradually acquired more and more things until It took two, three trips.
In 2006, when I left Bellingham to hike the Pacific Crest Trail I unloaded nearly everything I owned. All my furniture. My electronics I sold for $10 each. I made more trips to the thrift store then I did to the dump. It felt great.
Now, I am back to one Jeep load. But then there’s the furniture that I’ve been given by friends. Slowly I’m acquiring things, but as long as they’re new and free I feel okay about that.
